CA SPI Tony Thurmond Announces More than 100 School Districts in Support of Proposition 2

Sacramento - California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, who has previously endorsed Proposition 2, announced today that more than 100 school districts across California have joined the effort to pass the historic investment in schools.

“Schools across California need resources to make the urgent repairs to ensure our students have the safest possible learning environments,” said California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “Proposition 2 will provide needed funding to ensure safe drinking water, support the removal of mold and asbestos and retrofit schools for earthquakes and natural disasters. I’m honored to announce that more than 100 school districts are in support of Prop 2, and am committed to working with them toward victory next month.”

In California, 38% of children attend schools that don’t meet minimum safety standards and are exposed to dangers like asbestos, mold, unsafe drinking water, and extreme heat. Proposition 2 will authorize a $10 billion investment – without raising any taxes or fees – to make sure students are safe and have stable learning environments.

"Given the benefits of creating safe, secure, healthy, and stimulating school facilities for students, it makes perfect sense that elected officials from across the state, including many of our school board members, are joining teachers, business groups, labor unions, and other advocates in endorsing the Proposition 2 statewide school facilities bond," said California School Boards Association President Albert Gonzalez. "Prop 2 is an investment not only in schools, but in communities across the state, and it supports the well-being of today's students, the children of tomorrow, and California's long-term future."

Prop 2 provides funding for:

  • Safe drinking water for students

  • The removal asbestos, mold and lead paint

  • The repair of deteriorating sewer, gas and electrical lines

  • The rebuilding of schools immediately that were destroyed by wildfires, floods or other natural disasters

  • Protecting students from extreme heat at schools

  • Upgrade science, technology, engineering and math classrooms and labs for the 21st century learning and job training

  • Expansion of technical and vocational schools that provide affordable options for students and veterans to gain the skills needed for good paying jobs in a competitive global economy
