ICYMI: Education Leaders and Prop 2 Supporters Share Comments on Historic School Bond Measure

SACRAMENTO, CA - Just one day after Proposition 2 passed, supporters of the $10 billion bond have spoken out, applauding Californians and expressing commitment to next steps.

The measure, which passed with nearly 57 percent of the vote, comes at an essential time for school infrastructure, as previously approved bond money has been used, yet the need is greater than ever. The dedicated funding approved by voters will help update K-12 public schools, along with community colleges and career technical education classrooms and job training centers.

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance), Chair of the Assembly Education Committee and lead author of Proposition 2, stated, “Thank you California voters for approving Proposition 2.  With the passage of this bond measure, schools and community colleges throughout the state can be fixed and upgraded so that we can provide safe school facilities for all, regardless of who you are and where you live."

“Proposition 2 is not just about updating schools to meet the basic safety requirements that students should be afforded, but it’s about creating more equitable learning environments that benefit all of our public school students,” said California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “I am proud of Californians for showing such resounding support for Prop 2 and look forward to next steps in making our schools better for all students.”

“Californians prioritized vital investment in public education with the passage of Proposition 2. Prop 2 will provide safe, updated classrooms for students and teachers across the state,” said David Goldberg, President of the California Teachers Association. “We look forward to getting to work to ensure that schools are getting the resources to make the meaningful improvements Prop 2 will provide.”

“Proposition 2 is a huge step forward for public schools in California,” said Alan Reising, Chair of Coalition for Adequate School Housing.  “This measure will not only help modernize the hundreds of schools that are decades old in California, but will ensure the kind of learning environments that we know students do better in. Congratulations to our coalition and the work done to pass Prop 2.”

“Many schools were built over 70 years ago, are unsafe and face serious structural challenges,” said Dan Dunmoyer, President & CEO, California Building Industry Association. “Prop 2 will help make essential updates to schools – to fix leaking roofs, malfunctioning bathrooms, and to remove or replace asbestos, mold, lead paint and lead pipes. These updates are long overdue and we look forward to helping bring California schools to the 21st century together.”

“California public school students thrive when they have safe facilities and infrastructure that supports their learning and growth,” said Dr. Edgar Zazueta, Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Executive Director. “We celebrate Prop.2’s passage, knowing its importance to student achievement and well-being.”

“The State Building and Construction Trades Council of California has supported Prop 2 since it’s introduction because not only does the measure have a real world impact on learning environments for students, but it has real world job implications for construction workers who will work to bring schools back to safety,” said Chris Hannan, President of the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California. “We are ready to get to work for the students, teachers, school workers and community students who deserve these upgrades.”

“We thank the voters of California for passing Prop 2 and their consistent support for educating California’s children… there is no better investment for the long-term health of our state than giving all our kids a quality education in a safe and sound physical environment… Prop 2 will provide K-12 schools and community colleges with the modernization upgrades and basic maintenance that are way overdue,” said Danny Curtin, Director, California Conference of Carpenters.

California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO) CEO Tatia Davenport said, “CASBO celebrates the passage of Proposition 2, a major  investment in school facilities that will directly enhance learning environments and empower California’s students to thrive.”

"Passage of Proposition 2 demonstrates that Californians understand the essential role of community colleges in providing opportunity for individuals seeking to advance in or change careers, and that safe and updated facilities and equipment are necessary for career and transfer education,” said Larry Galizio, Ph.D., President & CEO, Community College League of California.
