Yes on Prop 2 Applauds School Janitors on National Custodian Day

SACRAMENTO - In celebration of National Custodian Day, the Yes on Prop 2 to Repair Local Public Schools Campaign applauds the work of school custodians across California.

“While California urgently needs to pass Prop 2 to fund necessary upgrades to schools across the state, it is because of the hard work that school custodians do that so many schools have been able to sustain for so long without repairs,” said Alan Reising, Chair, Coalition for Adequate School Housing. “School custodians keep hallways safe and clear, take care of water from leaks, maintain bathrooms and clean offices and classrooms.”

California’s local public schools have gone without essential repairs and upgrades for too long, and students are suffering the consequences. Many schools were built over 70 years ago and 38% of children attend schools that don’t meet minimum standards where they are exposed to dangers like asbestos, mold, unsafe drinking water, and extreme heat.

Prop 2 will make the most urgent repairs and upgrades in our local public schools by authorizing a $10 billion investment – without raising any taxes or fees – to make sure our students are safe and ready to learn.

“As we celebrate National Custodian Day, we honor the dedication of the school custodians who work tirelessly to keep our schools safe and functional,” said Adam Weinberger, Association President of the California School Employees Association. “For too long, our public schools have been in need of critical repairs, but it's the hard work of custodians that has helped keep things running. They’re the first line of defense, managing leaks, maintaining clean facilities, and ensuring safe learning environments. Their contributions are invaluable, and that’s why CSEA proudly stands behind Proposition 2. Not only will it improve conditions for our students, helping them learn and thrive, but it will also support the dedicated custodians they rely on every day.”

Prop 2 provides funding for:

  • Safe drinking water for students

  • The removal asbestos, mold and lead paint

  • The repair of deteriorating sewer, gas and electrical lines

  • The rebuilding of schools immediately that were destroyed by wildfires, floods or other natural disasters

  • Protecting students from extreme heat at schools

  • Upgraded science, technology, engineering and math classrooms and labs for the 21st century learning and job training

  • Expansion of technical and vocational schools that provide affordable options for students and veterans to gain the skills needed for good paying jobs in a competitive global economy

Specifically, Prop 2 will Fund:

  • $4 billion for the upgrade and repair of local public schools

  • 3.3 billion for new construction of public-school facilities

  • $600 million for public charter school facilities

  • $600 million for career technical education classrooms and job training centers

  • $1.5 billion for local community colleges
