More than 100 Groups and Organizations Sign on in Support of Proposition 2
Measure will provide critical funding for urgent school repairs and upgrades
Sacramento, CA - Just two months after Prop 2 was put on the ballot, more than 120 organizations across party lines have signed on in support, showing the urgent need for investment in our schools.
“For too long, California’s local public schools have gone without essential repairs and upgrades and our students and communities suffer the consequences,” said David Goldberg, President, California Teachers Association. “Prop 2 will authorize a $10 billion investment - without raising any taxes or fees - to make sure students across California are safe and ready to learn.”
In addition to providing the necessary funding to update and upgrade California public schools, Prop 2 also contains strict accountability provisions, public disclosure, and independent audits to ensure schools are actually getting fixed.
“Prop 2 is critical for the future of California’s community colleges, which play a vital role in bolstering the workforce throughout local communities,” said Larry Galizio, Ph.D., President & CEO, Community College League of California. “With $1.5 billion in funding, colleges will improve the safety of their buildings and modernize facilities, enhancing student learning outcomes and strengthening pathways to well-paying, sustainable jobs.”
“Districts throughout California have schools built over 70 years ago and despite best efforts for upkeep they may face real health and safety issues,” said Dr. Edgar Zazueta, Executive Director of the Association of California School Administrators. “Prop 2 will help make essential updates to schools – to fix leaking roofs, malfunctioning bathrooms, and remove lead from drinking water because when kids are in a safe learning environment, they do better in school.”
Prop 2 is a broad based coalition supported by teachers, school nurses, the California Democratic and Republican parties, school districts, Boards of Education, the League of Women Voters of California, the California Labor Federation, business groups, and social justice organizations, among others.
“The research is clear, with healthier studying environments, students perform better,” said Dr. Sheri Coburn, California School Nurses Organization “We need to make sure students have access to classrooms where the roofs over their heads aren't leaking so they can focus on learning."
