Leading Community College Advocates Endorse Proposition 2
Sacramento - Leading Community College voices across California have joined together urging voters to support Proposition 2. The measure will provide funding to make the urgent repairs and upgrades needed in our local public schools and community colleges by authorizing a $10 billion investment – without raising taxes or fees – to make sure our students are safe and ready to learn.
“Proposition 2 has the potential to create a lasting impact statewide by funding projects that are essential to educational and workforce development programs on community college campuses,” said Larry Galizio, President & CEO, Community College League of California. “This measure ensures that funds are directed to locally approved initiatives, empowering community college districts to prioritize projects that best serve the needs of their students and local communities.”
Proposition 2 provides $600 million for career technical education classrooms and job training centers as well as $1.5 billion for local community colleges.
“For many students, four-year universities have become too expensive to consider. Thankfully, our community college programs and courses provide opportunities for middle-class Californians,” said Fred Diamond, Chair of Community College Facility Coalition and Director of Facilities and Construction at Citrus College. “Prop 2 will infuse critical funding into community colleges and expand access to quality, college education, job training and professional development.
“Prop 2 will expand technical and vocational job training programs to ensure that regardless of where they go to college, students can compete for good paying jobs,” said Dr. Wolde-Ab Isaac, Chancellor, Riverside Community College District. “Community colleges will be able to expand and upgrade offerings to align with 21st century careers.”
In addition to essential funding for community colleges and career technical education, Prop 2 provides:
$4 billion for the upgrade and repair of local public schools
$3.3 billion for new construction of public-school facilities
$600 million for public charter school facilities
