Equality California Endorses Proposition 2

Equality California Endorses Proposition 2

Prop 2 will help make essential updates to schools, providing safer learning environments

Sacramento, CA - Equality California is the most recent statewide organization to join a growing number of groups across the state in support of Proposition 2. The measure  will make the most urgent repairs and upgrades in our local public schools by authorizing a $10 billion investment – without raising any taxes or fees – to make sure our students are safe and ready to learn.

“LGTBQ+ students already face added hardships attending school, and research has proven that when learning environments foster safe and emotionally stable conditions, students do better,” said Tony Hoang, Executive Director, Equality California. “Prop 2 will provide the necessary updates and infrastructure repairs to ensure that more kids have access to safe drinking water, better air filtration, upgraded classrooms and labs and that we remove the harmful mold and lead paint our students have been exposed to for far too long. These updates will in turn give every student the learning environment they need and deserve.”

In addition to providing essential upgrades for public schools, Prop 2 contains strict accountability provisions, public disclosure, and independent audits to ensure California schools are actually getting fixed.  The measure prevents politicians from redirecting this funding and includes protections that keep local control and ensure funding from the measure is used as voters intend.

Specifically, Prop 2 will Fund:

  • $4 billion for the upgrade and repair of local public schools

  • 3.3 billion for new construction of public-school facilities

  • $600 million for public charter school facilities

  • $600 million for career technical education classrooms and job training centers

  • $1.5 billion for local community colleges

About Proposition 2
