Bay Area, CA - From the South Bay to Marin County, organizations across the Bay Area have joined in support of Proposition 2. The measure will make the most urgent repairs and upgrades in our local public schools by authorizing a $10 billion investment – without raising any taxes or fees – to make sure our students are safe and ready to learn.
“School facilities in Alameda County are in dire need of renovation and repair. Prop 2 will allow districts to extend the impact of local facilities funds with matching dollars to provide 21st century learning environments for our students,” said Dianne Jones, a school board member in the Fremont Unified School District. “Modernized school facilities are correlated with improved academic achievement, better student behavior, reduced absenteeism, and increased staff retention. This investment in our school facilities directly impacts the success and well-being of our Alameda County students. Prop 2 funding will go exactly where the voters intend – the classrooms where the students will benefit.”
Bay Area news outlets have also endorsed Prop 2, with the Santa Cruz Sentinel saying, “The Sentinel Editorial Board recommends a Yes vote on Prop. 2 because children in California deserve school facilities that are in good repair. Providing no funding would hurt all students. The Bay Area Reporter editorialized with, “This is a common sense measure that should be approved. Public schools and community colleges will benefit from this funding.”
“The best investments we can make in our future are the investments we make to ensure students get a good education, including providing them with safe, clean and updated classrooms and schools,” said Jim Wunderman, President and CEO of the Bay Area Council. “We support Prop 2 because our students need safe, clean and updated classrooms and schools so they can focus on learning, pursue their dreams and contribute to our economy and our communities.”
Specifically, Prop 2 will Fund:
$4 billion for the upgrade and repair of local public schools
$3.3 billion for new construction of public-school facilities
$600 million for public charter school facilities
$600 million for career technical education classrooms and job training centers
$1.5 billion for local community colleges
